It's a Three Province Day!

We woke up before the sun was up and saw the giant moon lighting up the sky. Melkie seems to be getting better, he chased a squirrel the minute I opened the door for him to go out. He came limping back a few minutes later though so he's not fully recovered yet. We headed down the road only to stop a few minutes later at the Manitoba border. The welcome centre was closed though so we continued on our way. It's unbelievable how fast the terrain changed to flat! At first it was nice but became monotonous quickly. I was happy to arrive in Winnipeg where we stopped to do some chores (refilling our propane tank and gassing up for 91 cents). Soon we were on the road again and arrived at the longitudinal centre of Canada (96*48'35"), we didn't stop and just read the sign. Our next stop was Portage la Prairie where we stopped at a rest area that was gorgeous! The leaves were falling and there was a river where several guys were fishing but no one seemed to be catching anything. It was the perfect break away from the drivers seat. We stopped again in Brandon where I finally came to my senses and took a turn being a passenger rather than a driver. We stopped to take a picture of the Saskatchewan sign as we crossed over into another new province. After a dinner break I took back the driver seat and drove into the sunset. Normally I hate night driving but it's so flat here that when the sun goes down it stays light ahead of you for a really long time (making it so much easier to see). Of course just as it was getting too dark for comfort we arrived in Regina and hit construction at the same time. I had wanted to get past the city and stay somewhere secluded tonight but quickly changed plans and found the nearest Walmart parking lot. I can't believe how many other travellers are here! There are probably twenty trailers, fifth wheels or RVs here but only one short bus. Good night World!

A new province....tomorrow!

This morning Melkie seemed a little bit better! Our first stop was Kekabeka Falls. It was gorgeous and would have been the perfect place to spend a few hours except we were still worried about Melkie and only went to see the Falls one at a time so that someone could stay with him. He did manage a short walk on the grass and was barking at other dogs like he was in charge but he still isn't back to normal. We drove for hours though amazing scenery but because I was driving I didn't get any good pictures. I'm starting to regret offerings to drive the whole way, my butt is sore from sitting still and my hands are sore from gripping the steering wheel. On the bright side we are almost half way there! We crossed into a new time zone today and there was a rest area with a marker, Michael was excited to get an hour younger instantly and wanted to go back and forth watching his cell phone change time. Kenora and Lake of the Woods was gorgeous! I would love to come back and explore the area in the future. There were hundreds of tiny islands in the lakes making it look like a great place to kayak. The sun was setting as I drove away from Kenora. I managed to make it to the last Ontario test stop, the Manitoba border is 2km away! I'm excited for a new province but at the same time realize that there is still so much more to see in Ontario. I would love to go to Hudson Bay one day but for now I am calling it a night (even though it's not even 9pm yet). Good night World!

Wawa to Thunder Bay

I woke up early and decided to try to get us to Wawa before Michael woke up. I failed miserably as he woke up shortly after but it was a gorgeous drive through mountains and valleys filled with lakes. By the time we rolled into Wawa I was running on fumes and happy to see the gas station on the edge of town. After gassing up I headed back a few kilometres to Magpie Falls ((or High Falls the sign had different names) where we stopped for breakfast. Michael took the dogs for a walk but when he came back there was something wrong with Melkie. He was acting very disorientated (like he had forgotten how to walk). He had been on a leash the entire time and Michael hadn't seen him eat anything but I had let him out during the night and maybe he ate something then. It set the mood for the day and even though we were driving through an absolutely gorgeous area with multiple Provincial parks we didn't stop to explore or take any pictures. We made several stops to try to get Melkie outside and moving around but he wasn't having any of it. Other than water and a bit of tuna broth he wasn't interested in eating either. One of our stops was at White River where the famous black bear Winnie the Pooh came from. Another stop was at the Terry Fox monument just outside of Thunder Bay. I have a lot of conflicting thoughts as I stand near the monument. The only one I will share is that it is pretty freaking amazing how much one person can change the world! Good night World!
